Casualties and Rescue Efforts
According to reports, the fire started around 4:30 pm on Saturday and quickly spread, engulfing the gaming zone. Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to rescue several people, but many were trapped inside. The death toll has risen to 27, with at least 9 children among the victims.
Investigation and Arrests
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and have arrested two people, including the gaming zone's operator and manager, in connection with the fire. Six others have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Cause of the Fire
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by sparks from a welding machine that landed on highly flammable materials stockpiled within the premises. The gaming zone was also found to have only one exit point and lacked a no-objection certificate (NOC) for fire clearance.
Government Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹200,000 from the PM's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased individual. The Gujarat government has also ordered an inquiry into the incident and has promised to provide compensation to the affected families.
Reactions and Condolences
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and grief, with many expressing anger against the government and the local administration for the tragedy. Condolences have poured in from across the country, including from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
